Day 13: Choosing To Serve

Day 13: Choosing To Serve

Reflection

The scripture we chose for the Being Servants value is:

…do not use your freedom to indulge your self-life; rather, serve one another humbly in love.

Galatians 5:13    NIV

Over recent years there has been a lot of emphasis on us each being ‘free’ – we are loved, free and powerful. All of which is true. Rightly understood. In God’s different kingdom, freedom is not the freedom to do what we like. It is the freedom to choose to love and to serve.

Freedom means that we become so completely free of self-indulgence that we become servants of one another, expressing love in all we do.

Galatians 5:13  The Passion

We do not serve because we are made to do it, but because we choose to do it. In the kingdoms of the world, of the sword, service is coerced. In the kingdom of the cross, service is gladly chosen out of love. And in God’s different kingdom, as our King showed, such humble service is the most powerful thing to do. Humble, sacrificial, servant-like love is the most powerful thing in the world.

Prayer

Father, thank you that in your beautiful, different kingdom the greatest are those who have learned to be the servants of all. Help us to choose to serve you, one another and all people, not because we have to, but because we choose to – out of love. Amen.
