I write this especially for those who are new students, starting at University for the first time. But I am posing a question that all of us Christians need to ask ourselves. Are we simply consumers of church, of spiritual experiences, of great worship music, of Bible studies, of group camaraderie? Or are we genuinely responding to Jesus’s call to follow him? To be disciples, or apprentices, of Jesus? Are we even clear on what that means?

In coming to a new place as a student, you could easily just opt to tag along to the nearest church. Or go where it’s easy for you simply to consume what they have on offer? Companionship. Music. Teaching. Spiritual highs. Best doughnuts, or student lunches. But are you called to something more?

We are a church that will help you be a follower of Jesus. As we have come out of lockdown, we are refocusing on what it means to be a disciple, to be a follower of Jesus. Join us online or in-person. If you want to be a serious follower of Jesus, it will eventually lead you to be a fully engaged member of a spiritual community. But you start where you are when learning to follow.

We are not claiming to be the only church that will help you to be a follower of Jesus. We hope and trust that this is what you will find in most churches in Huddersfield – if that is what you truly want. But whichever church you engage with, and we would certainly encourage you to join one, determine to take discipleship seriously. If you join us at Community Church, you will be warmly welcomed and helped, but most of all we will encourage discipleship and not just spiritual consumerism. Why not come along and find out more about what that means?
