Key Quote:
When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus. 38 Turning round, Jesus saw them following and asked, ‘What do you want?’ They said, ‘Rabbi’ (which means ‘Teacher’), ‘where are you staying?’ (John 1:37-38)
Notes
To reproduce disciples we have to be disciples. We are all following something or someone and being formed by them. Trevor Lloyd spoke about the two questions in John 1:35-39 – what do you want? and where are you staying? You can hear the message and/or read the post here.
The ‘what do you want?’ question addresses our desire. Will we live by our strongest desires (often not good), or will we let discipleship to Jesus draw out our deepest desires? The only way we can do this is by a quality choice to make Jesus our home – so the question becomes ‘where will you live?’ We must be conscious and careful of the emotional and cultural spaces we inhabit and intentionally remain in Jesus.
Questions
If it helps, here are two questions to guide your discussion (but don’t be limited by them):
- What do you think when read the words: ‘your strongest desires are not your deepest desires’?
- How we practically make Jesus our home – how do we ‘live’ in him?
For Next Time:
In the next message and Hub Notes, we will look at the cost of following Jesus.
